Truth (The High Priestess)

The Enlightenment Tarot Truth Card (High Priestess)

The faculty of consciousness of the Truth card is memory. Without memory, we wouldn’t be able to function. We would be a floating awareness and couldn’t make use of what we become aware of. Further, our awareness would be subjective, dreamlike, and ignorant of facts and truth.

Memory works through associations. Mnemonic associations connect units of memory and weave a matrix of knowledge. That’s why this card has the ancient epithet the uniting intelligence

Memory is rhythmic. Memories come and go, and memory keeps reminding us of things that seem important. That’s why the woman in the picture wears a crown made of a full moon and two lunar crescents. The substance of her robe is water, which symbolizes the fluidity of consciousness. The scroll on her lap signifies memory.

The woman in the picture is not only the mother of truth but also the mother of balance and serenity. The dualism assigned to the Truth card is peace and strife. This hints at an important fact: truth brings inner peace and untruth causes inner tension.

Mind equilibrium is a superpower. Lao Tze referred to this facility of consciousness when he wrote, “When the mind is still, the universe surrenders.”

Truth is relative to contexts. Take a meteorite as an example. In a scientific context, it is exactly that: a meteorite. In a religious context, it may appear as a gift of the gods.

On the three lower levels of human expression, facts become different truths. On the bodily practical level, adversity is just that: adversity. On the intellectual level, it becomes a challenge. On the creative-feely level, it turns into an opportunity. On the spiritual-intentional level, we realize that adversity is a particular dealing of the higher self with our souls. As we rise through the levels of human expression, we discover the verity within truths. In the mother of all contexts — the spiritual context — facts and truths are the same thing. Hence, the Truth card stands for universal truth, i.e., ageless wisdom.

An auspicious Truth card calls for the formation of clear and proper memories. To do so, we need to be attentive. The fact that the Truth card follows the Attention card shows this.

An auspicious Truth card also calls for unconditional acceptance of truth and facts. Trust truth. Truth is always good. Truth heals. The truth always comes out. The earlier we admit the truth, the less time untruth has to manifest karma.

An inauspicious Truth card may indicate that the querent brought about her challenge by believing in misinformation, a lie, or a fake. In this case, the Truth card calls for thorough research and the establishment of facts.

An inauspicious Truth card may also indicate that a lack of memory, loss of memory, or fuzzy memories caused the querent’s challenge. Mind that memories change over time. The brain function that recollects memories is the same as that which imagines. Every time we recall a memory, imagination may modify it a little.

On the Tree of Life, the path of the Truth card connects the spheres Intention (1’s) and the Higher Self (6’s). The white veil symbolizes Intention and the cube (six sides) signifies the Higher Self.

Truth illustrates the upper path on the middle pillar, which establishes the pillar of consciousness. The water that flows from her robe symbolizes the (virgin) substance of consciousness. The electric charges signify the spirit that animates consciousness.

The middle pillar balances the severe-involving and benevolent-evolving activities of the left and right pillars.

Halfway down this path is Daath, the so-called non-Sephirah. Daath means knowledge. But Daath is no ordinary knowledge, it signifies gnosis, i.e., knowledge by union, aka mystical knowledge. Gnosis stands for recollecting ageless wisdom. Essentially, enlightenment is a matter of recollecting the truth about the self through gnosis. Gnosis allows us to traverse this path (6 → 1) and experience illumination — the full realization of the higher self.

The 1→ 6 direction signifies one of those rare moments when we experience an inner (divine) intervention. Take the climax of the movie Flight with Denzel Washington as an example. The protagonist was accused of crashing an airplane under the influence of substances. Because of the lack of evidence, the protagonist just needed to lie in court to escape prosecution. When the moment of truth arrived, the higher self blocked his ego. He spoke the truth and went to jail.

The titles and the five core meanings of the Truth card are:

Enlightenment Tarot title: Truth

Traditional title: High Priestess

Power of consciousness: Memorization

Constructive use: Memorability, forming clear memories

Unconstructive use: Obscurity, inattentive memorization, unclear recollection

Auspicious state of mind: Truth, clear recollection, a sense of inner harmony

Inauspicious state of mind: Obliviousness, a sense of inner disharmony, deception

On the spiritual-intentional level, the Truth card stands for cosmic memory, aka the akashic records, and may hint at past-life karma.

On the creative-feely level, the Truth card stands for being in the flow.

On the intellectual level, the Truth card represents creative synthesis, aka associative thinking. Synthesis denotes uniting different thoughts to form a new, synthesized thought, which may lead to an innovation.

On a side note, in the external world, the high priestess signifies quantum entanglement.
