Reason (The Emperor)

The Enlightenment Tarot Reason Card (Emperor)

The armored man in the picture is our inner experiencer. He sits on the vantage point of reason, observing the streams of experiences in the external world and the flow of the inner dialogue.

He is a seasoned experiencer — competent, calm, and cool. His armor is passive, and he carries no weapon. The scratches on his armor bear witness to the challenging and hurtful experiences that evolved him.

Mrs. Generation and Mr. Reason are engaged in teamwork. Mrs. Generation produces experiences, and Mr. Reason analyzes them, gains insight, and gives her feedback. This allows Mrs. Generation to create new and greater experiences, which enables Mr. Reason to gain even more insight into life.

Reason leads to both insight and foresight. Insight and foresight allow us to architect complex experiences, like a family, a business, or even a civilization. For this reason, ageless wisdom assigned to this card the epithet constituting intelligence

An auspicious Reason card calls for exercising reason, insight into experiences, and having foresight in undertakings.

If the querent’s question pertains to undertakings, the Reason card is the most auspicious since it is the patron of pioneering, ventures, and business development.

An inauspicious Reason card may indicate that a lack of insight and/or unreasonable expectations (irrational foresight) caused the querent’s challenge.

On the Tree of Life, the path of the Reason card connects the spheres Wisdom (2’s) and the Higher Self (6’s). The gray halo symbolizes the 2’s and the cube the 6’s. This connection implies that acting sensibly implies acting according to the principles (wisdom) that apply to the context in question.
