What Are the Meanings of the Nine of Pentacles?

Enlightenment Tarot Nine of Pentacles

The Nine of Pentacles represents energy on the bodily-practical level of human expression. Nine of Pentacles upright: moderation. Nine of Pentacles reversed: excess.

Intelligence on the Tree of Life

The respective faculty of consciousness is vigor, which denotes abundant bodily energy and the power of the mind over the body. Imagine you want to lift something heavy. For that, you need to use two types of energy: muscle power and neuromuscular energy. The latter is vigor. Sometimes, we lack muscle energy to lift weights, but we can call upon our vigor to do so anyway. Have you heard of the 40% Rule of the Navy Seals? When your muscles signal they’re done, they are only 40% done. Vigor unlocks the remaining 60%.

It can also happen that we have muscle power but lack vigor. We experience the latter as mental fatigue. Emotional stress depletes neuromuscular energy. Mentally taxing jobs can turn people into couch potatoes. Although their bodies have sufficient muscle power to exercise, the lack of neuromuscular energy prevents them from being active after work. When neuromuscular energy sinks below a certain threshold, people slide into depression. Andrew Solomon meant this when he said that the opposite of depression is not happiness, but vitality. Lacking neuromuscular energy can go as far as lacking the energy to get out of bed.

Mind neuromuscular energy is a bit of a mystery. Moving our bodies feels like the most natural thing, but we can’t tell how we do it. Try it out: lift your arm. How did your mind manage? If you wish to penetrate that mystery, practice Chi Gong or Tai Chi.

The body generates its life force by assimilating subtle energies in food, air, and sunlight and stores the surplus in the chakra at the base of the spine.

From the Saturn chakra emerge the three basic bodily energies: Chi, Jing, and Shen. Chi is the bodily life force. Jing and Shen are the bodily manifestations of Yin and Yang, the male and female currents of Chi.

Chi, Jing, and Shen rise through three energy channels along and within the backbone, the so-called nadis. The Hindus call these channels Ida, Pingala, and Sushumna. As Chi, Jing, and Shen rise, they reach first the Mars chakra behind the navel. The Mars energy is mostly Shen, a hot red energy that powers sexuality, cellular regeneration, muscular tonicity, and neuromuscular energy. Emotionally, this force manifests as drive and ambition. The related hormone is adrenaline.

From there, Chi, Jing, and Shen rise further through the remaining five chakras. When they reach the head, they turn on the lights and illumination happens.

The body’s energy system is the meridian system. The meridian system comprises pathways or channels through which various bodily energies flow. Chinese medicine discovered 361 acupuncture points through which we can manipulate energy flows.

When something obstructs energy flow in the body, the affected body parts develop inflammation. Chronic, low-grade inflammation promotes oxidative stress and is a significant contributor to aging and age-related diseases. As we age, we collect chronic inflammations. If left untreated, these will turn into diseases or afflictions. Processed foods and sugar boost inflammations. If you don’t like to medicate, you can treat energy blocks with acupressure, acupuncture, Yoga, an anti-inflammatory diet, and natural antioxidants.

The Nine of Pentacles calls for gratitude toward our bodily life force, if not for veneration. The life force is sacred, and so are its expressions — including sexuality. Reframing sexuality from porn to Hieros Gamos is a life-changing and life-prolonging practice.

The Nine of Pentacles also calls for energy exercises like Yoga, Chi Gong, Tai Chi, and meditation, as well as sufficient relaxation and sleep. Mind that sufficient sleep increases health, energy, and longevity by a whopping twenty percent.

If the querent’s question pertains to an undertaking, an auspicious Nine of Pentacles indicates that productiveness is a key ability that will help her overcome her challenge. This is where the secondary meanings of abundance, self-sufficiency, and independence come from. Productiveness means efficiency. Hence, you may want to ask the querent whether she is busy or productive.

An inauspicious Nine of Pentacles may hint at health issues caused by lack of energy and insufficient sleep, and that the querent may be approaching burnout. The underlying cause may be an unhealthy lifestyle and/or workstyle. Symptoms of energy depletion are headaches, migraine, brain fog, dysthymia, and depression.

An inauspicious Nine of Pentacles may also indicate sexual dysfunction or sexual inner demons like sex addictions. Neighboring cards can hint at the respective flavor of the addiction. For instance, an inauspicious Awakening card may suggest masochism, an inauspicious Nine of Pentacles voyeurism, and an inauspicious Seven of Pentacles fetishism.

Related to reproduction, an inauspicious Nine of Pentacles may indicate issues during (late) pregnancy, even the danger of miscarriage. Apart from taking all available medical precautions, the querent should conserve and boost bodily energies.

Nine of Pentacles Symbolism

Enlightenment Tarot Nine of Pentacles

The nine cups in the picture form almost a Tree of Life. Only the last sphere (materialization) is missing.

In numerology, the number nine signifies completion.

Traditionally, the name of the ninth sphere is foundation, i.e., the energetic foundation of the last, materializing sphere on the Tree of Life.

While the ninth sphere completes the activities of a Tree, the 10th sphere produces the result of such a completion. For instance, the completion of a business delivery still requires payment (the result).

The Five Psychological Core Meanings of the Nine of Pentacles

We derive the psychological meanings of Tarot cards from their position on the Tree of Life. In the Enlightenment Tarot framework, the Nine of Pentacles represents Yesod of Malkuth, i.e., energy on the bodily-practical level of human expression.

Every Tarot card represents a faculty or power of consciousness. We can use faculties of consciousness constructively and destructively, which produces either a fortunate or an adverse state of mind. Hence, every Tarot card has five core meanings.

These are the five core meanings of the Nine of Pentacles:

  1. Power of consciousness: Vigor, physical robustness
  2. Constructive use: Moderation
  3. Unconstructive use: Excess
  4. Auspicious state of mind: Stamina, resilience
  5. Inauspicious state of mind: Frailty, fragility

Reflective Questions

If the Nine of Pentacles appears in your spread, it may be beneficial to ask yourself the following questions:

  • In which areas of your life are you busy, and in which ones are you productive?
  • What daily habits either conserve or drain your life force?
  • Do your sexual practices vitalize or drain you?
  • What signs does your body give you when energy flow is obstructed?
  • Do you treat sleep and relaxation as optional — or as the foundation of vitality?
  • In what areas of your life do you push past healthy limits?
  • If depression is the absence of vitality, what practices help you conserve and increase vitality?
  • What would change if you approached your body not as a tool, but as a companion?
  • When you feel exhausted, is it truly physical fatigue — or depleted neuromuscular energy caused by stress or emotional strain?

Nine of Pentacles Summary

The Nine of Pentacles calls you to honor your life force, cultivate vitality, and protect your body from unnecessary stress.

Where Do Tarot Card Meanings Actually Come From?

The meanings of Tarot cards come from various sources. The most common are:

  • The position of the Tarot cards on the Tree of Life
  • Astrological correspondences (signs, planets, & houses)
  • The symbolism of Tarot cards
  • Intuition
  • Meanings that pertain to fortune-telling

Most of the Tarot card meanings you can google are astrological correspondences and go back to the Golden Dawn and Arthur Edward Waite. Astrological meanings have dominated because Astrology favors fortune-telling. But Astrological meanings are unsuitable for (psychological) Tarot readings.

If you are interested in an overview of the astrological correspondences, you can download a high-resolution chart by subscribing to the Enlightenment Tarot.

Tarot card meanings are a bit of a mess since the meanings that pertain to their position on the Tree of Life mingle with astrological correspondences, symbolic interpretations, and fortune-telling connotations. That’s tedious to memorize. Further, tarotists’ opinions, knowledge, and linguistic backgrounds shaped some of these interpretations. Last but not least, many meanings are fuzzy, contradictory, and overlapping. If you want to understand why they overlap, read the article How to Deal With the Overlapping Meanings of Tarot Cards

The meanings of the Enlightenment Tarot are based on an objective and holistic framework: the Tree of Life and the four levels of human expression. The resulting meanings are transparent and logical and, hence, easier to memorize.

What Various Tarotists Say About the Meanings of the Nine of Pentacles

Let’s explore what various tarotists wrote about the Nine of Pentacles.

Tarotists emphasize the astrological significance of Tarot cards since these lend themselves to divination and fortune-telling.

The Nine of Pentacles corresponds to the second decanate of Virgo, ruled by Mercury and sub-ruled by Capricorn and Saturn. Both are earthy signs, which gives the Nine of Pentacles a strong practical inclination.

The main Virgo characteristics are: serving, industrious, and discerning. The second decanate adds the following vibes to the mix: methodical, prudent, and calculating.

The corresponding Tarot cards are Attainment and Adversity:

The Enlightenment Tarot Attainment Adversity cards

The hermit is an agent of grace and guides through the light of wisdom from within. The devil forces the light upon us through adversity.

Virgo rules the sixth house of responsibilities and routines, aka the house of health. This house governs employment and other services that we provide. This includes health matters — the responsibilities we have toward our bodies and minds. This house also governs literacy and the knowledge we need to assume our responsibilities. Virgo rules the abdomen and digestive system.

Capricorn rules the 10th house, the house of material affairs and business, aka the house of social status. This house governs worldly ambition and standing, businesses, career, professional goals, occupation, and the results thereof, like success, achievements and awards, reputation, expertise, and worldly authority. It is also the house of adversity, which governs the problems, conflicts, and difficulties that come with the pursuit of material gain. The tenth house rules the knees and the skin.

What Paul Foster Case Said About the Meanings of the Nine of Pentacles

For the Nine of Pentacles, Paul Foster Case proposed the keyword harvest.

Mind, while harvest is the completion of the growing season, farmers still need to store the crops and/or sell them. The Ten of Pentacles represents this final step.

Paul’s auspicious meanings are: prudence, reserve, discretion, caution, frugality – all Virgo talents – and completion (the numerology of nine), material gain, and gain through careful investment (10th house).

When this card is well dignified, and other cards in the layout confirm it, it may represent inheritance, material gain, and a strong increase of goods. These meanings correspond to the auspicious influences of Saturn in 10th-house matters. Having said that, an inheritance is more of an 8th-house matter.

Paul’s inauspicious meanings are: discouragement, troubles through theft and trickery, and worries over money matters because of slow-maturing plans. These are mostly inauspicious 10th house matters.

What Arthur Edward Waite Said About the Meanings of the Nine of Pentacles

Rider-Waite Nine of Pentacles

Arthur Edward Waite believed the Nine of Pentacles signifies accomplishment (numerology of nine), safety (through accomplishment), success (10th house), certitude (through success), and discernment, which is the basic intellectual capability (Mercury in Virgo).

The picture shows a person in a forest with a falcon (a symbol of hunting), enjoying some leisure time. Mind, the falcon is hunting for him, and he does not need to strain himself.

An inauspicious Nine of Pentacles may signify roguery, deception, a voided project, fraudulent intent, and vain hopes. These are mostly Mercurial vices and inauspicious 10th house matters.

Last but not least, the Nine of Pentacles may indicate the prompt fulfilment (completion) of what is predicted by neighbouring cards. This means the faculty of consciousness the Nine of Pentacles represent functions as a catalyst.

What Etteilla Said About the Meanings of the Nine of Pentacles

Etteilla, a French occultist, wrote that the Nine of Pentacles may signify fulfillment or deception.

He derived fulfillment from the numerology of the number nine (completion). Deception is a Mercury vice.

What Papus Said About the Meanings of the Nine of Pentacles

Papus, another French occultist and the founder of the Martinist Order, wrote that this card may foretell a durable fortune.

With this, he applied the numerology of the number nine to 10th-house matters.

What Gregor Mather Said About the Meanings of the Nine of Pentacles

Gregor Mather, the founder of the Golden Dawn, believed that an auspicious Nine of Pentacles signifies discretion, circumspection, prudence, and discernment, which are Virgo/Mercury talents.

His inauspicious meanings are: deceit, fraudulent intent, trickery, and deception. These are Mercury vices.

What Mme. Le Marchand Said About the Meanings of the Nine of Pentacles

Mme. Le Marchand, a celebrated 19th-century Parisian fortuneteller, believed that the Nine of Pentacles may foretell that a gentleman/lady will love the querent ardently as long as he/she has rosy cheeks. When the color fades, his/her love will fade as well.

Rosy cheeks are an indicator of bodily vitality. Hence, the Nine of Pentacles warns of the transience of mere bodily infatuation.

The Psychological Framework of the Enlightenment Tarot

Every Tarot card represents a faculty of consciousness. We can use faculties of consciousness constructively and destructively. This produces favorable and adverse experiences.

We can express faculties of consciousness on four levels:

  • The spiritual level (wands/fire/intention)
  • The creative-feely level (cups/water/imagination)
  • The intellectual level (swords/air/intelligence)
  • The bodily level (pentacles/earth/bodily action)

The four tools on the magician’s table symbolize these four levels:

  • The wand (spiritual)
  • The cup (creative-feely)
  • The sword (intellectual)
  • The pentagram (bodily)
The Magician or Attention Tarot card

These tools correspond to the four so-called elements: fire, water, air, and earth.
For this reason, the Enlightenment Tarot wands are made of fire, the cups consist of water, and the pentacles are composed of earth. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to illustrate something made of air, since air is invisible. For that reason, all swords are made of crystal to show at least transparency.

The Enlightenment Tarot derives its meaning from the Tree of Life and the four levels of human expression. This is an objective holistic framework that reveals the psychological imports of Tarot cards and their faculties of consciousness. Read more about this framework in the article The Psychological Framework of the Enlightenment Tarot.

The Enlightenment Tarot project attempts to rediscover the original meanings of the Tarot cards that pertain to their position on the Tree of Life. These meanings are simple, clear, and easy to memorize.

*This framework is compatible with Paul Foster Case’s qabalistic system.
